Throughout the NHS there is a system in place to enable referrals to be made outside of standard contract arrangements and every Health Authority has a budget for them. Fund Holders are even better placed as they can decide where to send you themselves. The system was intended to provide for situations where within the patient’s immediate locality, there is no specialist with the right expertise. I live in the Midlands and eventually got a referral to London. My GP was very reluctant to do so, so I went to my Community Health Council and they told me how to get the referral. My GP did it albeit reluctantly. Later he agreed it was the best think he’d done for me! If your GP still continues to refuse to refer you, invoke the NHS complaints procedure and if necessary change your GP.
