Question:  I suspect that my change to varifocal lenses two years ago was one of the contributing factors to my development of RSI. It is possible that the extra up and down head movements, when my sitting posture was already very poor, produced extra strain on my neck. I now, of course, see that with heavy computer use and very little upper body exercise I was bound to get problems sooner or later!  My next lot of glasses will definitely be single vision. I currently use a neck chain, and take my glasses off when I read print. This has

Answer: If you are working within the UK your employer is responsible for the cost of single lens specs for VDU work. The distance is set with these specs purely for the screen works so don’t try to leave your workstation still wearing them.
